The interim answer to the slide show question is Slideshow Refinery. We'll see. I found this program while looking up something unrelated: HTML Tidy.
So. How do I make something like a slideshow with event-driven text (overlays?) and event-controlled music? I don't know but I suspect it's something along the lines of DHTML. Off to the library!
